We all enjoy traveling to restaurants, pubs or cafes to eat out – especially when the hot weather comes and we can enjoy eating out. Or pick up food from the local supermarket or takeaway to enjoy a family dinner.
In the Black Country, we have a long way from the food business – from restaurants to takeaways, and from supermarkets to cafes.
We all like to think that we are buying and using quality food and drink. And thanks to the food hygiene rating, we can get a clear idea of the clean places in Wolverhampton, Walsall, Sandwell and Dudley.

According to the Food Standards Agency’s website, Dudley has 2,489 catering businesses, while Wolverhampton has 2,077, Walsall 2,033 and Sandwell 2,490. Many of them have the highest hygiene rating available – five.
But what about people with zero? There are a total of 18 blacks in the country. These are the places where inspectors have said that ‘immediate improvement is necessary’. That’s why we’ve taken a look at all the food and beverage businesses in the Black Country that have been given a zero hygiene rating.
Food Standards Agency inspections are carried out by the local authority and the results are updated on the FSA website whenever there is a new inspection by the council. * All ratings were valid until Friday, June 17, 2022. Inspection takes place throughout the year and is subject to change.
How are locations estimated?
- How food is handled hygienically – how it is prepared, cooked, reheated, cooled and stored,
- Structural condition of buildings – cleaning, layout, lighting, ventilation and other facilities,
- How does the business manage to ensure that the food is safe and that the standards will be maintained in the future so that the officer can be trusted.
The premises are classified after a scheduled but unannounced inspection by environmental health officials. Where premises fall short of the standard, officers carry out a number of interventions, including notices, revisions or further formalities depending on the conditions found, with the aim of bringing the premises to a more compliant position.
