Brandon Perea: Kalua is ‘Robert De Niro to Jordan Peele’s Martin Scorsese’

Daniel Kaluuya is “Robert De Niro for Jordan Peele’s Martin Scorsese”, his cast mate has echoed, as the pair reunite for the highly anticipated horror film Nope.

Ace actor Brandon Perea said that Kalua and Peele were “chariots” in the industry and that the production had been an “incredible experience”.

Details about Nope, which is set on a California horse farm, are scarce, although trailers suggest the film has a sinister and supernatural element.

The film is a follow-up to Peele’s acclaimed features Get Out and Us, the former winning him an Oscar for Best Original Screenplay.

His suggestive films are known for tackling issues of race in America and moving through the lens of horror.

Speaking to the PA news agency about Peele as a director, Perea said: “In the Martin Scorsese sense, Daniel is his De Niro.

“Me, I’m like ‘Let me be your Leonardo DiCaprio then,’ because Scorsese and he collaborate.

“I’m trying to be the second runner up, you know, that’s what I’m trying to do.”

About working on the film, he said: “It was an incredible experience.

“I learned a lot but my favorite part was working with all these incredible people. Working with Danny Kaluuya, Keke Palmer, Steven Yeun … Jordan Peele was behind the lens.

“These are all jugglers so what they do is the best.”

Peele has previously described Kalua as “My De Niro”, although the actor said it was necessary to “realize his career” before being mentioned with “those legends”.

“It’s nice but for me I’m always focused and it’s an absolute honor and a blessing that he looks at me that way, but it’s like, What are we doing?” He told BBC’s The One Show.

“You really have to do it. You have to make your career real, to mention with those giants.”

Speaking at the Knope premiere in London, Kaluuya told PA that it was “really cool” to be a part of the project and to help Peel “create another world”.

The 33-year-old actor wore black sunglasses with a white shirt and camel-coloured suit as he posed for photos outside the Odeon in Leicester Square.

Rappers Stormzy, AJ Tracy, and Mercury Award-nominated singer Joy Crooks were among the celebrities who joined the cast on the blue-carpet at the star-studded event.

Stormzy, 29, rocked a casual figure in a dark top, black trousers and gray trainers as she stopped to take selfies with a huge line of fans.

The Big For Your Boots hitmaker is a longtime supporter of Kalua’s work, having checked the actor’s name in a tweet after winning the BAFTA “Rising Star” award in 2018.
