Carey’s Classic FC needs penalties to see Dingle Bay Rovers in women’s final replay

Charleville Cheese Women’s League Final Replays

Dingle Bay Rovers 2

Classic FC 2

(Classic FC wins 4 – 2 on penalties)

Like a game of draw, this women’s final replay was another tough affair with lots of twists and turns and was ultimately settled by a penalty shoot-out.

The game got off to an explosive start with the classic clock leading up to just 30 seconds. After forcing a corner kick it was put into the box by D McMahon and a filled goalmouth by Lauren Dowling ended the ball over the net.

Dingle steadied the ship as the game progressed and began to make some very constructive strikes with the elusive Ella Sheahy a constant thorn in the side of the opposition.

She was engaging very productively with Emilie née Guerault and they were regularly raising the classic defense. Dingle’s first-half chance came from a free kick after the 25th minute, but Ella Sheahy’s shot didn’t sting enough to upset classic goalkeeper Chloe Fitzpatrick, who made a comfortable save.

Classic hit on the break with Dee McMahon joining up with Breda Slattery, but Dingle goalkeeper Beghin Sheahy was swiftly off her line and collected the ball at the attacker’s feet.

Dingle came out with a spring in his move in the second half and started asking serious questions of the classic defence. Katie O’Connor faced defenders at every opportunity, while the excellent Ella Sheaey was a constant threat in front.

He forced a corner that was given by Katie O’Connor into the box looking for Emily née Geralt, but she kept her shot over the top. Dingle continued to put pressure on the classic defense, but was unable to get the break he asked for.

When Linda Raymond set up Breda Slattery and her shot was only inches wide, Classic moved closer to extending her lead. Now both sides started using their benches and as soon as the half went on it, the classic was heading for victory.

However, Dingle never gave up and turned the game upside down in the 80th minute with a brilliant goal. Nasa Duffy displayed great grit and determination to win the ball into midfield and she showed great awareness to watch Katie O’Connor run as she applied a fine finish from close.

After that both the sides were very cautious and after 90 minutes it went into extra time with the game deadlocked. Dingle made three consecutive corner-kicks in the first extra time but got nothing.

His persistence eventually earned him the reward he deserved when an Emilie née Geirault corner kick found Klay Gaethet into a filled Golmouth and got it into the back of the net.

As the second round of extra time on the Classic began to tire and it looked like Dingle was on his way to victory. However, Classic never gave up fighting and he showed great character to keep his pace.

His effort was rewarded when he hit the brakes and Norma O’Connor drove home a sensational equalizer. With the game all class after 90 minutes it progressed to overtime.

In the middle of the first period of extra time, Dingle went ahead after a brilliant run by Calaya Getkett splitting the classic defense and she played into Emilie née Geirault as she drilled the ball into the back of the net.

As the second period of extra time progressed, the Classic appeared to be running out of steam and it looked like Dingle was on his way to victory. But the late game was turned on its head with a classic counter attack and Norma O’Connor enforced a scintillating finish.

The game progressed due to the stalemate and progressed to a penalty shootout. Norma O’Connor scored for the Classic after four penalties, but Emilie née Gierault hit her kick over the top for a dingle.

Then Breda Slattery scored for the Classic and Dingle had to score his fourth penalty to stay in the shoot-out. Classic goalkeeper Chloe Fitzpatrick was the hero in the end saving Ella Sheahy’s spot kick and the Trolley side won 4–2.

The Classic took the silverware after two marathon games, but Dingle should be commended for his fighting qualities, but unfortunately he lost in the lottery, which is a terrible way to lose a game.

Overall, West Kerry are a young team and their day will be down somewhere. There was a rousing reception after the game when the chairman of the KDL Sean O’Keefe presented the cup to the captain of Classic FC side Linda Raymond.

He lauded both the sides for providing a very exciting game and said that he was impressed by the level of football in the game. The captain paid tribute to his players for the enormous effort they put in to win the game.

It took passion and desire to reach the level of late and the great commitment the players showed. She paid tribute to Dingle Bay Rovers for two great games and said that Dingle will have his big day somewhere.
