As he did not want to do, Tom Brady gave another epic game-winning drive in the opener of the NFL season on Thursday night. But many were quick to point out that the bikinis must have had some help from the referees.
With 24 seconds left in the game and the Buckeyes down one by one, Brady completed a deep pass to Chris Goodon below the left edge, setting Tampa Bay on a game-winning kick in the field goal range. But Godon showed his arm outstretched and pushed Cowboys cornerback Jordan Lewis to the ground in the play – which could be called an aggressive pass intervention.
Terry McAuley, an NBC analyst and former NFL referee, joined the broadcast and expressed his belief that there should have been interference.
If the OPI had been called, the box would have been sent back to the 50 yard line in less than 20 seconds. Reef kept his flags in his pockets, however, setting up Tampa Bay with an easy field goal – which Ryan Sokup later drilled two plays to play.
Dallas head coach Mike McCarthy said after the game, “When it comes to tough dramas in a game, if it’s ticking, you’re better off (let it go).” Per USA Today.. “I would have taken the call. I wouldn’t have asked them to raise the flag. But the fines and the holding of things in the Clutch Times, I think it would be a real mistake there.”
Lewis refused to blame Reef and put the damage on his shoulders.
“We always talk about it: we can’t put it in the hands of the reef,” Lewis said. “It’s a toss-up. We played a game (but) at the end of the day, we can’t reef in a game like that.
When asked if Goddon’s speed caused him to fall, he said it did, but “I can’t say it that way. That’s what Reefs saw: no call.”
When asked not to call, Godon said he would not change anything and that he “never.” [worries] About pass intervention.
“I think it was a bit of a fight on both sides. It had some good coverage, it was a great pass and I tried to make a play for my team.
It was a disappointing loss for Dallas, who went from foot to toe with the reigning Super Bowl champions on their way back from a quarterback post-prescott injury but ultimately stayed short. Prescott himself spent one night, completing 42 of 58 passes for 403 yards and three touchdowns.
Still, Dallas proved that they can hang with the best teams in the NFL – even if some people argue they should have a mark in the winning column.
