Couple horrified to discover ‘thousands of chewed fingernails and toenails’ lurking in second-hand sofa

One woman thought she’d found a deal with a second-hand couch – only to be horrified to discover ‘thousands of chewed fingernails and toes’ while fishing for the remote.

Jess Taylor likens the rebellious quest to something like ‘out of a horror movie’ and is forced to take out the offending items that included feathers, sweet wrappers, elastic bands and tufts of hair.

The 29-year-old administrator and receptionist said that when she learned she and her partner raised their voices, they said they sounded like ‘uncooked rice’ when empty.

The pair, who sat happily on a cream fabric recliner for a week before realizing it lurked next to them, have now decided to put their TV remotes on the bookshelf next to the sofa.

Jess of Larne, Northern Ireland, said: “Looking at everything like something out of a horror movie, it was so gross.

“It just looked like trawling rice, it was gruesome. We were blissfully oblivious to this for a week.

“On Monday night we asked ‘Where’s the remote?’ of daily routine.

“My boyfriend started looking at all the blankets because it’s usually wrapped in one of them.

“She stuck her hand under the couch and pulled out some sweetie wrappers and sweets.

“Then I put my hand under the sofa and was pulling out pieces of stuff – we both gasped with fear.

“There were thousands of nails, they were cracked or chewed on.

“Once we realized how bad it really was, I went and got a Hoover. I have some car cleaning attachments and put them on and just glued it to all sides of the two sofas.”

Jess, originally from Peterborough, Cambridgeshire, bought the sofa after eight-month-old Staffy Dexter broke the last one by leaping on it.

Jess said: “I bought the original sofa I bought new, but my eight-month-old dog, Dexter, had Jumies tied on it and a broken leg.

“I kept an eye out for a new sofa but I thought Dexter is young so I would be so protective of this couch and it would take up such a huge chunk of my savings.

“I looked online and saw a second hand I threw on the couch anyway, so I didn’t mind.

“It was from a fella who buys and sells furniture. It was £325 for a three-piece and two-seater but then it took off £85 for my old one.”

Eco-conscious Jess said the sofas were delivered on January 24 and everything seemed fine until the remote disappeared.

The couple were horrified to discover dozens of nails and old sweet wraps

Jess said: I very much think not to take things to the dump because they have a house, I think it’s more eco-friendly to save stuff if you can.

“But there was definitely a line that was crossed.”

Jess wrote on Facebook: “Recently my sofa broke down and I wasn’t in a position to buy a new sofa.

“I also knew that buying a new one would put a lot of stress around the house with two dogs I would be very protective of.

“This leads me to looking for second-hand sofas.

“I found a nice looking set, smoke and pet free home, once they arrived they didn’t smell or give me a reason to turn up my nose. Oh, it worked!

“Until ….tonight my partner was doing a daily ‘where is the remote, you have it’ routine. (I didn’t have it).

“The remote was down on the side of the sofa, when I put my hand down to hold it..

“He felt the weight of the yak.. he said took the yak out and it was a handful of sweetie wrappers and finger nails.

“Inspection and over several intervals later, we got not hundreds but thousands of finger nails of varying sizes. I don’t know what this person’s rate of nail growth is, but they must have been on some sort of growth supplement, Or there were about 10 extra arms/feet.

“Then we pulled out the remaining nails, it looked like the uncooked rice was being trapped.

“My goodness, I’ve never been too disappointed in my entire life.

“I would have uploaded a picture but it would violate almost every law on this planet.

“Tip – check your second-hand stuff thoroughly! I learned the hard way!”

Frightened social media users flooded the comment page saying how rebellious the growing of nails was.

One person wrote: “Omg how old was he cause the couch is a buildup of bitten nails over the years.

“It takes a lot for me to gross out and it certainly did. How incredibly disgusting lol.

Another commented: “I’m really gagging, could only read half.”

One person wrote: “This is not normal. Surely these people weren’t serial killers?”
