How Emotionally Intelligent Leaders Use the ‘McDonald’s Paycheck Rule’ to Defuse Anxiety and Inspire True Loyalty

There is a lot of worry in the world at this time. Very nervous You might be taking some of it yourself.

If so, here’s something worth knowing. Because people with very high emotional intelligence understand three key things about anxiety:

  • First of all, it is rooted in emotion. It is about the nexus of fear and imagination.
  • Second, it is contagious. Nothing spreads like other people’s concern.
  • And third, sometimes the best way to overcome your fear is to find ways to help other people overcome their fears.

With that, let’s talk about Tom Philiu, the owner of McDonald’s restaurant in Mayfield Heights, Ohio. You might recognize his name, or the city, and of course, “McDonald’s.”

Phillieu reported earlier this month that it would continue to pay its employees full salaries for three months, even if it closed its restaurant for renewal.

It was not cheap. And, there are really smart, objective business reasons why someone might do this. For one thing, if you don’t pay your employees, they will leave! Then, when you’re ready to reopen, you’ll be faced with the challenge of replacing them.

But, while I was surprised to find a wonderful example of emotional intelligence at McDonald’s, many things about Philieu’s story surprised me.

He said that’s the question he asked himself when he realized how long the renovation would take, according to Washington Post: “How are these guys going to make it through without a paycheck?”

There’s the answer that he said came immediately: “We’re going to pay full price to everyone.”

And, what I’ve found in several reports about Philly’s decision are details that some of his employees have been working on for him:

  • Ed Kocsis, 55, general manager of the restaurant, who began working there in 1982;
  • Marie Conti, 78, a manager who began working there in 1977.
  • “Dozens” of other staff members have worked for Philau for decades or more, according to the Post, “many of them rising through the ranks from maintenance to managerial positions.”

“We have very little business,” Kocsis said, “I think it’s because they enjoy working here, and they are treated with respect. They love working here, so they want to stay.”

Why do people act normally? They certainly do this for the money; Most of us have to work to live. But they also do so to satisfy emotional needs: purpose, community, self-confidence.

Philio’s renewal decision could have been one part of that equation: The confidence of his employees seemed ripe for replacing with concern.

However, his response was not just ordinary business; It was emotionally intelligent.

People noticed. The workers were grateful. (“Floors and … extremely laudable,” explained Kocsis Post, “I thought it was fantastic.”)

cat, of all things, a reddit thread filled with admiration:

  • “I grew up around here and have always heard that the owner of this McDonald’s was an amazing guy!”
  • “I lived here and with my wife and I will always say this is the best McDonald’s ever. Now I see why. Being a good boss who values ​​his employees goes a long way.”
  • “Tony… Rules and this McDonald’s, no joke, is the best ever.”

We sometimes put names on these behaviors to make them easier to remember.

But this example of practical emotional intelligence in business is so good that I think we should give Phillau our place in history by calling it the “McDonald’s Paycheck Rule.”

I know there are other companies that pay salaries to their employees even in tough times. And as I thought about this story I reached out to some of them.

But the example of Philiu stands out.

Perhaps it has to do with the wisdom that comes with age; Philiu is 90 years old, and as another non-entrepreneur, Warren Buffett says:

“When you reach my age, you will really measure your success in life by how many people you want to love, you really love you.”

He may have had an experience that was indistinguishable from that of many of his employees. Philieu himself has been working at McDonald’s since 1962.

If doing so helps to calm anxiety and build your business along the way, I think it’s a pretty good rule to follow.
