I love my life – Pep Guardiola is happy at Manchester City

Manchester City boss Josep Guardiola is happy at the club and motivated by more than winning the Champions League.

Wardiola is entering his seventh season at the Etihad – his longest tenure at a single club as a manager – and with four Premier League titles, an FA Cup and four League Cups, City dominate the domestic scene.

But success in Europe has eluded them, with just one run to go, and the only trophy they haven’t won is the one they talk about the most.

Guardiola, who won the Champions League twice with Barcelona, says he doesn’t have an “obsession” with it and it doesn’t affect whether he stays at work.

“I’m still sitting here because we won,” he said of his longevity at City.

“If we hadn’t won, I wouldn’t be sitting here. I didn’t win, we won together. Most of the time I am here in these institutions for many hours and then I go home. I love my life.

“Everything is fluid, if there were problems, I would not be here for seven years. I’m happy here, and if I don’t stay, it won’t be because I want to move somewhere else. This is because I will stop and take a break.

“It’s not about the Champions League. My life is independent, I would like to do it, it is not an obsession.

“It’s a dream or a goal, but I know how good the opponent is and how tough the competition is. Maybe people don’t believe me and think I’m making excuses, but I didn’t come here to win the Champions League.

“They didn’t ask me, of course they want to. I’m the first one who wants it. The same was true for Munich.

“Every season I want to win the Champions League and I don’t feel defeated when we haven’t won it at Barcelona or Bayern.

“At the same time, I am not the master of the universe when I win it. I’m not leaving in 11 months if we don’t win the Champions League. We want to try to do it, but that won’t be the reason.”

Guardiola says his motivation to stay at City is to improve the team and despite winning trophies over the years, he believes the club can get even better.

“Improving the team and getting better is the main reason why I am still here,” he said.

“I’m sad because we lost the Community Shield, but especially because we didn’t play as well as we could.

“The only thing I’m here for is to help the team play better and improve individual players. Nothing lasts forever, not even this team that has done a lot of good in recent years.

“Everyone at this club knows that we have won four Premier Leagues in five years, which is extraordinary. We can improve it.

“Otherwise, if I feel that with the players I have, I can’t take the next step, we can do better. It’s the only reason I’m here.

“I’m not leaving here if we don’t win the Premier League, if we don’t win other trophies. I know that losing tournaments is more normal than winning.

“It will happen sooner rather than later. It’s been that way since the very first day I started playing for the second team in Barcelona.”
