Inspirational fundraiser Laurie Brophy, who completed the Welsh Three Peaks challenge at 89, dies

An inspirational charity fundraiser who completed the Welsh Three Peaks mountain challenge has died at the age of 89.

Laurie Brophy took on the challenge – which involves scaling the three tallest mountains in Meczyki – to raise money for a homeless charity. After completing the climb, Laurie spends the night showing solidarity with those who don’t have homes to call themselves.

Last summer’s mountain adventure was the latest in a series of fundraising challenges by Pencoyd’s notable former teacher near Bridgend, which has taken them across the UK and around the world. But it has now emerged that Laurie was not diagnosed with advanced oesophageal cancer while working on Three Peaks. His family says that he passed away on Thursday among his loved ones. He described Laurie as “completely free to the end” and added that he “certainly was not gentle on that good night”.

Lowry didn’t know it at the time. That he had esophageal cancer.

“Laurie was diagnosed in January of this year, unfortunately too late for treatment, so he set his final challenge to deal with it in his own way with incredible conservatism. He didn’t want anyone to know, the general He wanted to be as free as possible and certainly didn’t want any ‘quarrel’. He was fiercely independent till the end, and certainly not gentle on that good night.

“I hope it is a comfort to those who cared for him that he died peacefully at home with family and was not in pain in his final days.”

The Welsh Three Peaks Challenge – done to raise money for homeless charity Lamau – was the latest adventure for the indomitable pensioner. Laurie raised thousands of pounds for Lamau in 2020, when he became the oldest person to cycle from Lands End to John O’Groats, and he covered several long distances, including the Ofa’s Dyke Trek from Prestatyn to Chepstow, assisted by Y Bont Completed walking tour. , charity that supports children with disabilities. He has also run marathons around the world, and hiked in Chile’s Atacama Desert.
