Sun Riser Hyderabad (SRH) all-rounder Mohammad Nabi has said that he suggested that left-arm spinner Abhishek Sharma should bowl the 13th over against Mumbai Indians (MI).
MI defeated SRH in match 55 of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2021 in Abu Dhabi on Friday, taking a 235-9 lead while batting first. Mumbai then won by a huge margin of 42 runs.
Some rare moments of joy for SRH came in the 13th over when young Sharma bowled Kieron Pollard (13) and James Neshim (0) on consecutive balls. Pollard was brilliantly out, as he hit a full ball out of the ground. But stand-in captain Manish Pandey fielded exactly one fielder for the shot. Neesham then covered the next ball.
When asked about the plan behind bringing Sharma, Nabi revealed exactly what happened.
The captain asked me which was the better option – you or Abhishek? I said Abhishek is a better option because of the pitch and also because he can slide the ball into the right-handed batsmen. And the plan worked.
Interestingly, although Sharma was on the hat trick, he did not make another over in the innings. On the argument behind it, the Prophet explained:
In the next over (in the 15th over) there was a left-handed batsman (Colonel Pandya) and on the other side there was a short boundary. So I told the captain that I would bowl him. That’s how it all works out.
Sharma scored 2 for 4 in his one over, while Nabi gave up 33 runs in his three overs.
“Everyone is ready for the World Cup” – Muhammad Nabi.
With SRH’s campaign in IPL 2021 coming to an end, Nabi and fellow Afghanistan spinner Rashid Khan will now be on national duty for the upcoming T20 World Cup.
Asked for an update, the 36-year-old all-rounder said:
The team is waiting for a visa to the United Arab Emirates in preparation for the World Cup. He has already started training to start the season in Qatar. Everyone is ready for the World Cup.
Afghanistan will begin their T20 World Cup 2021 campaign with a Round 1 qualifier in Sharjah on October 25. Nabi has been named captain of the team following Rashid Khan’s resignation.
