Tom Thebudo cutting exercise short? Is Derek Rose emerging as an elderly veteran leader?
Just a few years ago, these ideas seemed illogical. The first round of the day with the Knicks, 2016-17, was an uneven season that involved going to AWOL. After mishandling a young roster, Thebodo flopped with Timberwalls (2016-19) in more than two seasons, including a total of 41 games a day.
But in their latest outing, the weird couple appears to be getting ready for the Knox version – head coach and point guard.
Rose confessed on Friday, “He throws me too sometimes.” You never know. If anything, people are seeing a different side of it this year, actually opening jokes or opening up. During the day, he was not doing that.
The rose will be clearly known. He has now played for Thebodo with three different organizations: Bells, Timber Wolves and Knicks. He came to the league with a crazy player who was faster than everyone else, able to enter the lane at will. Many injuries and many years later, He is not the only player. But Rose could still be effective, he said, pointing to an adjustment to his game and his increasingly better jump shot. The acquisition last February was crucial for the Knicks’ post-season.
“I learned that maybe in my ninth or tenth year, I wouldn’t have to go 100% or 90% just to play with different speed and understanding. [every play]”Adjusting my speed and understanding, I can organize people in different ways,” Rose said. It’s using my speed every time.
Thibodeau is also changing its pace on the spot. On Friday, it ended practice early, with players realizing they could use a low-light day two weeks before the start of the regular season. Known as a demanding discipline, it was a sign that Thebodo was adjusting, as Rose did. The veteran point guard talked about how different and how fast the game is compared to when he joined the NBA 13 years ago. Clearly, less can be more.
“People need that recovery, and you need that energy so you can go out and play,” said Rose, 33. “He’s aware of it, it’s the biggest thing. Sometimes, you need something bad that makes you ignore the nuances of what’s there. In order for him to be aware of it.” And to catch it, I think it’s great for the team.
This is not to say that Thebodo has softened. Newcomer Ivan Fournier had earlier said the training camp was reminiscent of his first nine years ago, when he was coached by George Carl Nougat. It feels like an “old school”.In terms of attention to detail, intensity and exercises drive the Nix. Thebudo Steels have extremely long hours, and last year’s stars – Julius Randall and RJ Barrett – were among the league’s leaders in minutes.
In the pre-season opener, its starters spent big minutes on an exhibition game, the first five playing at least 21 minutes. And Rose was quick to point out that Thebodo is as determined on the final results as he was on his first tour with the Bulls since 2010-15.
“Sometimes, Thubs will make you feel like he wants to win more than you,” Rose said.
Still, things have changed. Rose is now an experienced rookie and looks like a young athlete, a guard who has lost some of his athleticism. He has learned to maximize his potential.. Obi-Top Pin has repeatedly credited Rose for helping build confidence during her credit rookie season. Thebudo is the coach who wants his team to take 3 more pointers, showing the players a lighter side and was far-sighted to take his foot off the gas on Friday.
Together, they helped the Knicks to an eight-year playoff drought. Now, this wonderful couple is hoping for even more success.
