Man United: Lindelof superb vs Villarreal

Manchester United advanced to the last 16 of the Champions League in Michael Carrick’s first match at the helm thanks to two late goals from Cristiano Ronaldo and Jadon Sancho.

After an astonishing first half by the visitors, it improved in the second 45 minutes, and Fred’s tackle on Etienne Capoue in the 78th minute brought them to life.

The former Watford midfielder received a risky pass from goalkeeper Geronimo Rulli, and the persistent United player threw, which caused Ronaldo to expertly lift the ball over the rushing stopper.

United looked well organized and compact during the 90 minutes but rarely threatened the opponent’s goal until the final stages.

But Jadon Sancho compensated for a tame effort when one-on-one with Rulli in the final stages of the close match, hit the ball from the bottom of the crossbar and scored his first goal for the Red Devils.

Despite their counterattacks, the coach of United was happy with the game so far, but still wanted to change the line up.

David de Gea was forced to make two fantastic saves from Manu Trigueros, but overall, the back four of the Old Trafford kit stood firm against their Spanish opponents, and the prominent player was undoubtedly Victor Lindelof.

Was Lindelof United’s best player?

Yes definitely!

Yes definitely!

With the summer signing Raphael Varane currently injured, the 27-year-old took his chance to shine and played a crucial role in United securing their third zero of the season.

According to SofaScore, Lindelof was awarded a match rating of 7.7 out of 10, the joint maximum amount any player has received on the pitch at the Estadio de la Cerámica.

The Swedish national team player won all five of his duels, made a total of eight clearances and achieved a passing precision of 92%, which highlights his impressive performance and reborn status under interim manager Carrick.

Manchester Evening News journalist Tyrone marshall was also impressed by Lindelof and wrote: “Stand up well for the task and tried to play from the back”, after awarding him a seven out of 10.

With Varane set for a longer period on the sidelines, Lindelof will hope that he can maintain this level of performance in the coming weeks, which consolidates his place in the starting eleven as a result.
