MOSCOW, Oct. 10 (Xinhua) – An L-410 plane crashed near a town in the Tatarstan region on Sunday, killing 16 people and injuring seven others.
According to the TASS news agency, the emergency ministry said a group of parachute jumpers were on board. Seven people have been rescued from the rubble, he said.
The aircraft was an L-410 Turbolet, a twin-engine short-range transport aircraft.
The safety standards of Russian aviation have improved in recent years, but accidents, especially involving older aircraft in remote areas, are not uncommon.
An old Antonov N26 transport plane crashed in eastern Russia last month, killing six people. An accident in Kamchatka in July killed all 28 people aboard an Antonov N-26 twin-engine turbo prop.
