Both Syracuse and VCU enter Wednesday’s matchup in Battle 4 Atlantis after tough losses, with Orange wanting to make better defense and the Rams trying to strengthen their attack.
VCU has scored 57 points or less in all four of its games this season, and in its last two home games has lost to Chattanooga and Wagner.
At the same time, the Syracuse zone defense was beaten by 100 points in the recent loss to Colgate. Opponents shoot 36 from the 3-point distance against it, which ranks Orange 261st in the country.
The best way to defeat a zone is usually by scoring 3-pointers, and VCU is in 309th place in 3-point shooting, making only 26.3 percent of its shots.
Despite the defensive battles, Syracuse ranks 13th in the country in points per possession. VCU is ranked 342nd out of 358 Division I teams in this category. That’s why Orange – led by Buddy Boeheim (20 ppg) and Joseph Girard III (19.3 ppg) – will be the team to bounce back on Wednesday.
Plays: Syracuse, -5.5.
