Ace bad as many things are, Little Suzie Newsykins realizes that there really are some things to be thankful for this Thanksgiving. Tops her list (and mine), are covid-19 vaccines and now, boosters! Thanks to the miracle of the vaccine, we do not have to hide from our family and friends this holiday season.
And while today’s buzz is doom and gloom over inflation and the political fortunes of Democrats, things are really much better now than they were a year ago. The former head of the Interior Ministry – a lobbyist for the fossil fuel industry – has been replaced by Deb Haaland, a supporter of the Green New Deal from New Mexico’s Laguna Pueblo and the first Native American cabinet secretary in US history. Not so bad.
Sure, things are not great but it can be much worse. Yes, there are worrying conflicts, but Joe Biden and the Democrats have been able to push through some major initiatives. (Hello, infrastructure and child tax deductions?) Keep your fingers crossed for a meaningful bill for the social safety net.
However, it is far too early to give up and assume that the Republicans will take over the nation and abolish democracy. But maybe I’m just in an optimistic holiday mood.
Have a great Thanksgiving!
