A Brazilian bishop has resigned after a video of him allegedly masturbating on a video call went viral.
The Vatican has announced that Pope Francis has accepted the resignation of 60-year-old Bishop Tome Ferreira da Silva of Sao Jose de Rio Preto, who confirmed to local newspaper Diario da Reggio that he was in fact in the video, but no additional Not provided comment
The bishop has been subject to other Vatican investigations – including concealment of reports of sexual abuse – and many in his area have called for his removal since 2014.
In 2015, the Vatican launched an investigation into alleged embezzlement and having a romantic relationship with its driver.
In 2018, the Vatican launched an investigation into sexual assaults in the Ferreira area, including allegations that it covered up some of the allegations. The Vatican also investigated Da Silva’s reported relationship with a young man with whom he exchanged explicit sexual messages.
