California has become the first state in which large retailers require gender-neutral parts for products such as toys and toothbrushes.
Government Gavin Newsom signed a new law on Saturday requiring major stores to offer a gender-neutral section to show “reasonable selection” of items, whether traditionally for girls or for boys. ۔
Legislation only deals with toys and “child care items”, including hygiene and dental products.
Stores with at least 500 employees will be subject to the new legislation, which does not consider the traditional boys and girls section illegal.
Ivan Lowe, a member of the Democratic State Assembly who drafted the bill, said he was “incredibly grateful” that Newsom had signed the bill this year.
“We need to stop making acceptable stigma for certain genders and just let the children be children,” Lou said. “I hope this bill encourages more businesses in California and across the United States to refrain from reinforcing harmful and outdated stereotypes.”
The move was the third time Democrats in the state legislature have tried to pass the law, and similar bills failed in 2019 and 2020.
Republicans and some conservative groups have fought against the legislation, arguing that the government should not tell parents how to buy their children.
