The Cardinals fired Mike Schildt for “philosophical differences.”

The Cardinals fired manager Mike Schildt on Thursday over philosophical differences within the organization, just a week after the St. Louis National League lost to the Los Angeles Dodgers in a wildcard game.

Cardinals president John Moselick said the shooting was “something that came to light recently”, but declined to elaborate on what he called “philosophical differences.” He noted that Schultz was in the final year of his contract, but that this was not the only reason for the split.

Shield replaced Royals current manager Mike Matthews on a temporary basis in August 2018, then took a permanent job the following season. The Cardinals won 91 games this season, named Schildt as NL Manager of the Year, and advanced to the NL Championship Series before being won by the Nationals.

The Cardinals went 30-28 during the 2020 season less than epidemics, losing wild card games, before using the franchise record 17 game winning streak to reach the wild card game again this season.
