The Pirates rallied to spoil Bell’s comeback in a 4-3 win over Nuts.

Pittsburgh (AP) – Brian Hayes ended the ninth inning rally with an RBI single as the Pittsburgh Pirates beat Washington 4-3 on Friday night.

Hayes completed a two-run comeback from Washington reliever Alberto Baldonado by sending a pitch to the right field, scoring Ben Gamel in third for the first walk-off hit of his career.

Pittsburgh was trailing 3-2 to move to ninth, but quickly lost two men to Washington rookie reliever Patrick Murphy (0-1). Murphy gave way to Baldonado, who retired Cole Tucker but allowed Colin Moran to make a tying run on the ground at a short stop.

Hayes then won at PNC Park to spoil the return of former Pirate All-Star first baseman Josh Bell.

Bell, who spent five seasons in Pittsburgh and formed the All-Star team in 2019 before trading to the Nationals last December, hit his 26th home run of the season for Washington.

The home run was Bell’s seventh in his last 18 games, part of a season-long addition to the first baseman sent to Washington over Christmas for the prospect of top-down reconstruction in Pittsburgh.

Bell has been hitting .313 (21 for 67) since August 22, which is one of the few bright spots for the last-place finishers.

Chad Kohl (5-6) won after making a scoreless ninth pitch. Hayes and Anthony Alford hit two hits each for Pittsburgh. In the seventh, Ford’s solo homer pulled the Pirates to 3-2.

Washington starter Josh Rogers kept Pittsburgh out of balance for 6 2/3 innings in his second start for Washington after rising to senior positions. He allowed two runs on eight hits with one walk and one strike out.

Riley Adams tripped the RBI in the second innings with the help of Steven Brollet and scored on Lane Thomas’ run scoring to give Washington an early lead.

Baralt saw his bid for his first victory since the end of last September when he came out with a left-arm injury after throwing 42 pitches in two innings. He spent the first four months of the season on his injury list with left back strain.

Many of the small crowd watching the clubs rebuild were wearing shirts and jerseys that had been plated with the No. 55 bull during their stay in Pittsburgh.

Now wearing No. 19 for Washington, Bell was warmly welcomed after stepping on the plate with two outs in the first inning and gave his red batting helmet in return.

Pittsburgh selected Bell as a stripping teenage outfielder in the second round of the 2011 Player Draft. He rose to major as the first baseman in 2016 and volunteered for the role as the face of the franchise following the January 2018 trade of star center fielder Andrew McCutchen.

Bell flourished in the first half of 2019, building the All-Star team after a hurricane in which he hit .302 with 27 home runs. It ended the proliferation, as did the pirates, whose second half of the commotion led to a franchise-wide reboot that focused on maximizing the potential.

The plan eventually forced Pittsburgh to send Bell to Washington and resume. Hess, who finished third in the NL Rocky of the Year belting a year ago, is considered a big part of the puzzle.

He was limited to a wrist injury earlier in the season but is progressing late.

Nolin, Martinez suspended

After Major League Baseball suspended Dave Martinez for one game, Washington Bench coach Tim Boger served as manager, and Dave Martinez was given a game after he deliberately killed Atlanta’s Freddie Freeman on Wednesday night. Started five matches starting pitch scene.

Citizen: Rocky Josiah Gray (0-2, 5.65 ERA) will start his ninth career on Saturday. Gray has allowed a combined 12 runs in his last start.

Pirate: Will Crow (3-7, 5.94) will start on Saturday against the team that selected him in the second round of the 2017 draft. Crowe was part of the trade that sent Bell to the citizens.
