The ships came close in the wild card race, stopping AK 4-3

Seattle (AP) – Kyle Seger hit a two-out, two-run single as part of Seattle’s third innings of four, Marco Gonzalez won his second straight decision, and the Marners won the American League Wild Card. Succeeded closely in the pursuit of. 4-3 win over Auckland Athletics on Sunday.

Seattle won three of the four in the series and pulled the AK1 within the game for AL’s second wildcard, perhaps making the Mariners buyers rather than sellers beyond the trade deadline.

The Mariners (-4 54–46) have eight games at .500 for the first time since April 2019 and have improved to 23-8 in one-run games.

The Marners made all their offensive losses in the third inning against Auckland starter Cole Aaron, scoring four times with two outs. Gonzalez (3-5) and four relievers retained the opening offense, scoring one run and three runs in the last six innings.

Gonzalez allowed two runs and five hits in 5 2/3 innings. He scored four runs and threw 105 pitches high in the season. JT Charguis, Casey Seidler and Anthony Macy’s combined for one run and one hit in 2/3 innings. Seth Brown’s pinch away from Sadler was the only loss.

In the ninth, Seattle’s Drew Stacknerrider got some defensive support when left-fielder Jack Bowers tried to move up to third in the Mitch Moreland singles after Matt Chairman was knocked out in the second. Stacknerider popped up to end Brown’s third save.

Innocence began with Seattle’s four-run stand on JP Crawford’s single. Mitch Hanger walked and Ty France was hit by a pitch for the 16th time this season, equaling the most in the American League.

Saver jumped on the first pitch from Iron (7-9), dropping it to the right field to score Crawford and Hanger. Luis Torrance followed France with a hard ground to score, and Tom Murphy caught the rally when his bulldozer fell to the center despite a diving effort by Rayman Lorino.

Matt Olson hit his 27th homer and Stephen Piscotti had an RBI double for AK.

Gone quickly

Irwin’s four innings start was the shortest of his season. He allowed five hits and four runs and struck out three.

Aaron has played at least five innings in each of his last nine starts, and the last time he failed to win five matches was against Seattle on May 25. On that day, Irwin allowed 10 hits and four runs in a 4-3 loss, and then said, “Such a team should not score 10 runs against me or anyone else.”

Move the router

Seattle has recalled RHP Ryan Weber from Triple-A Tecoma for additional depth in Balpin. Seattle claimed a waiver on Weber after it was nominated for the assignment by Milwaukee earlier this month.

Seattle chose Donovan Walton to clear the roster spot.
