Authorities say police in New Orleans were hit by a plane after an American Airlines passenger refused to wear a mask.
The incident took place on a flight from Louis Armstrong International Airport to Dallas at about 9:30 a.m. Friday. The New Orleans Advocate reported.
“I’ve never seen anything like it before,” said Patrick Mane, a professor of history at Tolan University, another traveler.
Mani said two armed police officers boarded the plane and ordered the woman to leave after not wearing a niqab under federal law for commercial flights.
He refused, and then they told him to get up. “She was screaming and resisting when they harassed her and put some kind of restraint on her hands behind her back,” Mani said.
Mani said he could hear the woman screaming for about 10 minutes while in custody.
“They keep saying she’s not an animal and she doesn’t want to be treated like an animal,” she told the newspaper.
According to the advocate, the American airline confirmed that the flight was delayed and the incident forced the plane to return to the gate.
Capt. Jason Rewards, Jefferson Parish Sheriff’s Office, said a woman was arrested for refusing several requests to disembark.
Rewarde said he faces charges of disturbing the peace, staying in one place after being banned, resisting arrest and a simple attack.
