Use Calendar to Prioritize Time With Your Significant Others

Working in the office and working remotely contribute to vastly different lifestyles, but both share the burden of long hours. Remote working is even more suited for long hours as it combines work and free time settings. But work is not supposed to be your main focus in life, and you have to focus on other things. Here are some ways to use your personal calendar to prioritize time regardless of your work responsibilities.

1. Create Blocks of Individual Time

You must work a specific number of hours or a certain amount each day according to your contract. But out of them, try your best avoid work altogether Otherwise, you spend less time with your significant other. You can help yourself to set this time aside by creating time blocks specifically dedicated to your home life. That may be all it takes to make a difference, even if the effect is purely psychological for you.

Different calendar platforms offer different ways to visualize your schedule, but most represent time periods as rectangular blocks. This is one reason why this method is called time-blocking – another is that other responsibilities are blocked. You do not need to think about the work at this time because either it has been calculated or will happen later. This is a great way to organize your daily agenda.

2. Divert work communication while off-duty

To facilitate these time constraints, you can design a system to divert work communication when you are not working. For example, current coworkers can be your point of contact so that others can contact you with inquiries, usually directed at you. On calendar programs that allow this, you can set up alternate contacts in your account for this purpose. That way, people who need you can be immediately directed to your point of contact when you invite them to something.

If all else fails, let people know in advance that you won’t be available and stick to it. As mentioned earlier, work is not your only priority and hence it need not come before your personal life. Anything related to work can wait until the next day – and if it doesn’t, you should pay for your time.

3. Mute task notifications during free time

In the end, you don’t have to do any of these things or reach out to the others. If coworkers are likely to disrespect your hours, reporting your unavailability can provide an opportunity for it. Ultimately if you mute notifications after work it will prevent a more significant headache no matter how important you need to be. And even if you’re partially available, you don’t want to be back at the office with every notification.

A convenient alternative is to have separate work and personal devices, with the former being the sole recipient of work information. But, of course, not all jobs have fixed hours, and you may need be on-call during the extended period. In this case, you can connect independent devices with physical separation from them during time with your significant other.

4. Set Up Automatic Responses to Events Outside of Working Hours

Another way to keep your time yours is to have your calendar automatically decline after-hours events. That way, you don’t have to do anything actively; If you really need to, sender can contact personally. But, again, doing so creates a purposeful filter that works in the background of your work. And the more reliably this process is set, the more difficult it is for others to circumvent your personal deadlines.

You can set specific days and times for automation so that it doesn’t happen universally. For example, if you have a date on Friday night, you can activate it only then. If you watch a movie every night from 8 PM to 10 PM, you can make your own calendar to avoid that period. Whatever works best for you and your work-life balance is ideal.

5. Keep Your Schedule Transparent

In the end, it may be easiest for you to make your schedule publicly available so that coworkers can consider it. Put the link in your e-mail and other message signatures so that anyone who contacts you can see it. Label your pre-made time blocks exactly as you need them, including the nature of the time, its inflexibility, etc. You want to clarify that it will not be transferred for anything.
