Woman stranded at airport after Ryanair’s hand luggage is ‘too big’

A woman with diabetes was abandoned at a Spanish airport after Ryanair said her hand luggage was “too big”. Teresa Bruce had to sleep alone overnight at Alicante airport without medication after being denied permission to board the plane with her suitcase.

Scott, 63, had gone on vacation with friends to Benidorm for five days. He was refused entry on a flight bound for Prestwick Airport until he paid €69 to have his suitcase in the plane’s hold.

Teresa was removed from the queue at the airport by a member of the airline’s staff and told to pay the fee if she wanted to return home with all her baggage. The type 2 diabetic was amazed by Ryanair’s stand as she came out with the same case a few days back.

The Asada worker could not afford this expense as she had spent all her cash during the journey. By the time a friend of hers transferred some money to her bank account, she was told it was too late to board.

She told the Daily Record: “We were queuing at the gate for priority when a lady came up to me and asked me to go with her and bring my suitcase. I went with her and she told me to proceed with my suitcase.” Was too big. The plane. I said ‘How can it not come on the plane? I traveled here with it’.

“He told me I would have to pay €69, but it was the end of my vacation and I didn’t have any money left. I couldn’t understand why I needed to pay for the case when I went to Prestwick Came in from. Just five days ago.”

Teresa requires weekly doses of medication to manage her condition. But the airline didn’t budge when it explained that her next dose awaits her return to the UK.

She said: “I need to take a jab every Thursday for my type 2 diabetes and I didn’t take it with me because it needs to be refrigerated. I was looking forward to going home that day.

“I asked to speak to a supervisor and said I had diabetes and had to go home for my medication. He said no and if I wanted to talk to someone about it I had to go to safety for someone to find me. Will have to go back via Via, but by that point my flight would have already departed.

“My friend messaged me to say that he has transferred money to pay me. I told him and he said I was too late and I could not fly because the flight was closed.

“There were people still waiting to go up the stairs to get on the plane. If someone was running late they would call and board them after that point. The flight attendant determined I was not on that plane was going.”

Teresa described being alone overnight at the airport as scary and said she was afraid to close her eyes.

“I tried to find somewhere safe in the airport and I fell asleep in the seats,” she said. “To think that Ryanair has abandoned a woman in a foreign country is absolutely shocking.”

Teresa returned to Scotland the next day. But he had to pay for a flight to Edinburgh as there was no direct flight to Prestwick for another three days.

A Ryanair spokesperson told the Daily Record: “This passenger’s cabin bag exceeded the dimensions permitted for his flight from Alicante to Prestwick (26 May). In accordance with Ryanair’s terms and conditions, accepted by the passenger at the time of booking The oversized cabin baggage must be kept in the hold of the aircraft for a standard fee. This passenger initially refused to pay the fee, but later changed his mind and returned to the gate, although the flight The boarding for the latter stopped and the passenger missed his flight.
